Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo (Saurothera longirostris)
|
In the Dominican Republic, Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo is
known as el pajaro bobo, or "the stupid bird." This affectionate
term stems from the bird's tame and lethargic behavior.
While the birds appear sluggish, the lizard-cuckoo has
adapted this strategy as the most efficient means of hunting
anole lizards, its primary food source. The lizard-cuckoo
finds an anole lizard within striking distance, then quickly
swings into action, attacking its prey in an abrupt thrust
of energy. Its long tail and short, rounded wings are
aerodynamically suited for tight maneuvering in thick
vegetation. The long and pointed beak allows the bird
to meticulously comb every alcove of forest.
